Caffeine

Does SugarReset Have Caffeine? Guarana and Green Tea in the Blend

Quick answer

The label does not list caffeine, but the blend names guarana (third) and green tea (seventh), and both contain it. Together they share at most about 95 mg of the 200 mg blend, so caffeine could be small, and the label prints no amount. People sensitive to caffeine should ask first.

The plain answer01

Is there caffeine in SugarReset?

Probably some, since two names in the blend carry it, and nobody can say how much.

Caffeine is not a line on the Supplement Facts panel. It appears indirectly, through guarana seed extract in third place and green tea leaf extract in seventh. Guarana seeds contain caffeine and related compounds, which is why it is a stimulant (MSK, Guarana). Green tea leaves contain caffeine too, with the amount depending on the extract (NCCIH, Green Tea).

The label does not state a caffeine amount, and many supplements are not required to. This is a gap you can close only by asking the seller for a test result.

The arithmetic02

How much caffeine could it be?

The most the two names could weigh is about 95 mg of extract, and only part of that is caffeine.

Guarana seed extract3rd66.7Seeds contain caffeine; the share depends on the extract (MSK, Guarana)
Green tea leaf extract7th28.6Depends on the extract; decaffeinated forms exist (NCCIH, Green Tea)
Both together-95.3A ceiling on extract, not on caffeine

Even a guarana extract that is mostly caffeine at the ceiling would give about 67 mg per serving, or roughly the amount in a strong cup of tea. At two servings a day that doubles. Because the extracts are unlikely to be pure caffeine, the real figure is probably lower, but the label gives no way to check. Treat the ceiling as the possible upper end.

Limits03

What are the usual limits for caffeine?

For most healthy adults FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects. People differ a great deal.

That 400 mg is about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee. An 8-ounce cup of coffee has roughly 95 to 200 mg, and an 8-ounce cup of tea 14 to 60 mg (MedlinePlus, Caffeine). Signs of too much include a racing heartbeat, high blood pressure, trouble sleeping, nervousness and shakiness (FDA, Spilling the Beans).

If you already drink three coffees and an energy drink, a further unknown source may tip you over. If you drink one cup, the blend's likely share is small.

Who should ask04

Who should be careful with caffeine?

Pregnant and nursing mothers, people with sleep disorders, anxiety, heart rhythm problems, reflux or ulcers, and anyone told to limit caffeine.

  • Pregnant or nursing: the label says to consult a physician, and caffeine is limited in pregnancy (MedlinePlus, Caffeine).
  • Sleep trouble or anxiety: caffeine can make both worse.
  • Heart rhythm problems or high blood pressure: caffeine, licorice and coleus all matter (NCCIH, Licorice Root).
  • Children and teens: the label says under 18 should consult a physician.

Caffeine also interacts with some medicines, such as some antibiotics and thyroid medicines, so mention it to a pharmacist.

Comparisons05

How does that compare with everyday drinks?

A serving of the drops is probably smaller than a cup of coffee, and probably similar to a cup of tea. That is a guess, not a measurement.

A person who drinks several coffees a day will barely notice an extra amount in this range. A person who has none, or who is sensitive, may notice it a lot. A fair test is to take the first dose on a day without other caffeine, and see how you feel over a few hours.

If you avoid caffeine06

What if you avoid caffeine for health or belief reasons?

Ask the seller whether the guarana and green tea extracts are decaffeinated, and for a test result that gives caffeine in mg per ml.

Some people avoid caffeine because of a heart rhythm condition, anxiety, reflux, pregnancy or religious practice. If any of these apply, a hidden or unquantified source is a real problem, and the safe choice is to wait for an answer from the seller or to choose a product that prints its caffeine content.

If you have a medical reason, tell your clinician what the blend lists. They can say whether the possible amounts matter for you. We would rather you ask than guess.

Tea or extract07

Is the green tea in the blend like a cup of tea?

Not exactly. An extract can be much more concentrated than a brewed cup, and it may or may not keep its caffeine.

The NIH notes that the catechins and caffeine in green tea and its extracts may have a modest effect on weight, and that liver injury, while uncommon, has been reported with extract pills (NCCIH, Green Tea). An extract made to be low in caffeine would be a fair choice for a caffeine-avoider, but the label does not say whether this one is. The seventh place in the blend means it could weigh up to 28.6 mg, a small share even before caffeine is considered.

As for guarana, the NIH describes its stimulant effects and common side effects of nausea and insomnia (MSK, Guarana). The pair therefore make the blend a possible, modest caffeine source. For most adults who drink coffee or tea that will not be noticeable. For some it will.

Caffeine and glucose08

Can caffeine affect glucose readings?

In some people, yes. Caffeine can change glucose and insulin readings, and effects vary from person to person.

For a person with diabetes, a new caffeine source can complicate the picture, because a change in readings has two possible causes at once. That is one more reason to change one thing at a time, and to tell your care team about every new product. We make no claim about the direction or size of any effect.

If you test your glucose, note the time of every dose and every coffee or tea in your log, so that your clinician can read it.

Practical tips09

How can you manage caffeine if you use the drops?

Count your other sources, take the drops early and watch how you feel.

  1. Count

Add up coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola and any pre-workout or weight product.

  2. Time it

Take the drops early in the day to protect sleep.

  3. Watch

A racing heart, shakiness or trouble sleeping means cut back or stop.

  4. Ask

If you are unsure, ask a pharmacist about the 400 mg guide for your situation.

For more on the extract, read green tea and the other 17 names.
